During her 25+ years of midwifery, Encinitas midwife Catharine Chichakian (chi-cake-e-an) has been invited along the sacred birthing journey with more than 1500 families. She is a Licensed Midwife (LM) through the State of California and a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). She also holds certificates in both Neonatal Resuscitation and in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professionals. Catharine’s experienced hands and conscious approach to natural childbirth have given families the guidance to birth their babies safely, lovingly and consciously.
Having worked in midwifery since 1985, Catharine has been involved in keeping the home birthing option open for families and in promoting the woman’s right to choose the best birthing path. She worked with the California Association Of Midwives (CAM) to get licensing in California. She was in the first group of 25 midwives to be licensed by the Medical Board of California, and received an honorary for ‘Pionering Efforts on legitimizing midwifery’. More importantly, before Licensing was available, CAM created a rigorous self-certifying program, and Catharine was one of the first midwives to become a CAM Certified Midwife.
She is still active in her state organization, the California Association of Midwives, and has served on their Board of Directors. Catharine is also a member of the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA).
She was a major contributor for Deepak Chopra’s series “Magical Beginnings, Enchanted Lives.” Her midwifery and prenatal yoga articles have been featured in birthing magazines and midwifery journals nationwide.
Catharine believes in women and their innate ability to give life to another being naturally. Empowering women all around her, she revels in the magic and mystery of life’s creative process.
“Catharine is a home birth guru. She has been guiding home-births for over 25 years. Catharine’s program focuses on wellness from beginning to end. She is a certified pre-natal yoga teacher with a very knowledgeable touch. It’s definitely nature’s way and she is the best.”
“Our daughter was born into Catharine’s loving and competent hands. Throughout the childbirth education process, homebirth, and postnatal care, Catharine informed, guided, supported and respected our deepest intuition about how to bring Rose into the world.”
-Dr. Trisha Brady, Ph.D Psychologist/ Baby Rose
“As a physician who has delivered over 600 babies, I can honestly say that Catharine’s approach was more comprehensive, thorough, nurturing and supportive than any standard of care that I have seen in the traditional medical community.”
